The Importance of Brake Repair

Z’s Car Care in Hillsboro, OR, knows how important keeping your vehicle’s brake system in top shape is. Your brakes are one of your car's most critical safety components, and when something goes wrong, it can compromise your ability to stop effectively, putting you and others at risk.

Brake System Components

Brake pads are one of the most essential components in the braking process. They press against the brake rotor to create friction and slow down or stop your vehicle. Brake pads wear out over time due to constant friction. Worn-out pads will reduce braking efficiency and can cause damage to the rotors. You may hear a squeaking or grinding noise when the pads are worn down. If the pads break, you risk damaging the rotor or, in extreme cases, losing braking ability entirely. Brake rotors are the metal discs the brake pads clamp down on when applying pressure to the brake pedal. The rotors help dissipate the heat generated during braking, keeping the system efficient. Rotors can become warped, cracked, or severely worn out. Overheating is a common cause of rotor damage, especially if you’ve been driving with worn brake pads for too long. If the rotors are damaged, you may notice a vibration or pulsation when applying the brakes. In some cases, the rotors will need to be resurfaced or replaced entirely. Brake calipers are responsible for clamping the brake pads onto the rotors. They house the pistons that pressure the pads when you press the brake pedal. Calipers can become seized or sticky over time, particularly if the seals wear out or corrosion builds up. A seized caliper may cause uneven braking, pulling to one side, or brake dragging, which can overheat the brakes and reduce their effectiveness. The master cylinder is the heart of your braking system. It converts the pressure you apply to the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure that gets sent through the brake lines to activate the brakes. The master cylinder can fail due to internal leaks or wear. A faulty master cylinder will cause soft or spongy brake pedals, reduced braking power, or inconsistent braking performance.
